In May 2025, I submitted an application for a ‘Little Book Stop’ as part of Penguin Books’ 90th Anniversary celebration.

I was delighted that my application for Bedford Park was one of the 90 chosen from over 2,000 applicants!

The Library Box is installed by the Bedford Road entrance of Bedford Park. My successful letter is installed on the reverse side of the box.

I hope all local residents, whether in the park or just passing by, will be inspired to regularly peruse the inventory of this box and feel encouraged to take home any book that catches their interest.

Equally, I hope residents will be inclined to donate any books that they have finished and would like to share with the rest of the Birkdale community.

My Winning Letter to Resident (on reverse of box)

“Dear Reader,

I have lived in Birkdale my whole life, having been born at Southport Hospital in 2001. Birkdale is more than just where I live; it is a community I love and am proud to be part of. As a child, I enjoyed playing in Bedford Park and have great memories of my parents teaching me to ride a bike by practising along the park’s path. Later, as a teenager, I spent time in Bedford Park with fellow students, taking part in local litter picking efforts to help care for our green space. Now, as a young adult, it is great to see that Bedford Park remains a treasured space for the whole community.

Birkdale Library was another place I enjoyed spending my time as a child, where I would often browse the shelves to find a new book to take home and read. However, since the library’s closure in 2013, we have missed out on the delight of spontaneously picking up a new book while passing by. This was the main reason I felt inspired to apply for a Little Book Stop in Bedford Park. I hope that this Little Book Stop will bring back that same joy of discovering new books and improve access to reading in the Birkdale community.

About Penguin Books: Since 1935, Penguin has been at the heart of the stories and ideas that shape the world around us. Our journey started with a simple, but controversial idea. That quality literature should cost no more than a packet of cigarettes. Despite scepticism from publishers and booksellers, our founder, Allen Lane, was proved right. Within a year, three million Penguins had made it to readers’ shelves. From the first ten paperbacks with their iconic triband design, to the bedtime stories, cookbooks, classics and thrillers you enjoy today, our authors and books have always been there in the moment, defining culture and helping us make sense of the world.

Throughout the decades, we have connected people to books they love and treasure, books that spark ideas, and books that fuel debates and arguments. From wars and the welfare state, through punk and psychedelia, to free speech and fantasy, Penguin has been a companion across countless movements, trends and tastes for generations of readers. 90 years on and our mission remains the same. Penguin makes books for everyone. Because a book can change anyone.
